Who We Are

Founded in September 2023 and incorporated as a Canada-based not-for-profit in July2024, Lawyers Combating Antisemitism is a global network of over 2,300 legal professionals united in the fight against antisemitism through education, advocacy, and legal action. We equip lawyers with the tools, resources, and knowledge they need to combat antisemitism head-on.

Vision Statement: A world where the legal profession unites to eliminate antisemitism inall its forms, fostering a global society grounded in justice, equality, and mutual respect.

Mission Statement: Lawyers Combating Antisemitism unites lawyers, law students, and related professionals in the fight against antisemitism through legal strategies, legislative advocacy, and the application of international human rights law.

By sharing knowledge, resources, and successful case studies, and collaborating on actionable strategies, we harness the power of the legal profession to confront antisemitism directly while fostering greater understanding, fairness, and dignity for all individuals and communities.

Jill Mayer

Founder and Chair

Jill Mayer is a licensed attorney in Tennessee and a seasoned professional development consultant with extensive experience as a not-for-profit executive.

As the former Director of Continuing Professional Development at the Ontario Bar Association, she has over two decades of expertise in designing and delivering professional development initiatives for lawyers, corporate directors, and other professionals. Her work is deeply rooted in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and combating antisemitism.Jill has pioneered award-winning, career-enhancing programs for legal, financial, and corporate professionals, covering over 40 areas of law, wellness, diversity, inclusion, anti-discrimination, and governance.

Her leadership within the legal community is exemplified by her initiatives, including the OBA’s "Mindful Lawyer Series" and "Inclusive Leaders Series". Since 2018, Jill has been at the forefront of developing programs aimed at leveraging legal expertise to combat antisemitism, serving both Canadian and U.S. legal organizations.

In September 2023, she launched the LinkedIn group, Lawyers Combating Antisemitism, and went on to establish this non-profit organization in July 2024.

Anita Bromberg

Secretary Treasurer

Anita Bromberg is a lawyer and member of the Ontario Bar. She frequently serves as a spokesperson, lecturer, trainer, and media representative on issues impacting racialized communities. As a court-recognized expert on racism and extremism, she has been instrumental in initiating and participating in numerous intercultural outreach and educational initiatives.

Anita currently serves as the President of the Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation. Her previous roles include Executive Director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, National Director of Legal Affairs for B’nai Brith Canada, and Human Rights Coordinator for their League of Human Rights. In these capacities, she led the organization's legal advocacy efforts, managed the Anti-Hate Hotline, and oversaw the publication of its annual report on racism.

She also served on the advisory cabinet of Faith in Canada 150, which celebrated the diverse religious traditions contributing to Canadian society. Presently, Anita is actively engaged in various interfaith efforts, including Canadian Conversations, which hosts a biennial conference to foster community bridges, and as a member of the Transformation Institute, where she works to build understanding between Black and other communities.

Michael Osborne

Vice-Chair

Michael Osborne divides his practice between competition law, commercial litigation, and arbitration at Cozen O’Connor LLP.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Michael also serves on the board of directors of the CIArb Canada Branch. He actively participates in several legal organizations, including the Canadian Bar Association’s Competition Law Section, the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Section, the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society, and l’Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario.

In addition to his legal practice, Michael regularly teaches at The Advocates’ Society’s skills programs. His experiences as a student at a Francophone high school in St. Boniface during the Manitoba language crisis deeply shaped his understanding of the effects of discrimination and hatred on minority communities. In response, he founded the Parlement jeunesse franco-manitobain in 1984.

Michael is a past president of the Thomas More Lawyers’ Guild, an association of Catholic lawyers in Toronto, and a vocal advocate for Canada’s Jewish community. He is currently working to launch Bring Love, a lay Catholic organization dedicated to combating antisemitism.

Mark Sandler, LL.B., LL.D.

Honorary Board Member

Mark Sandler is the senior partner at Cooper, Sandler, Shime & Schwartzentruber, LLP, and has practiced appellate, trial criminal, and administrative litigation for over 43 years.

Mark has served as senior counsel, advisor, or reviewer in more than 20 public inquiries and independent systemic reviews. He is widely regarded as one of Canada’s foremost criminal lawyers and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. For over a decade, he was an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School.

Elected three times as a Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario, Mark also served as Chair of the Law Society Tribunal for several years. He is a former Commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission and Chair of its Tribunal Committee. Mark received the G. Arthur Martin Medal, the highest honor in the criminal law profession, for his contributions to the administration of justice. In 2023, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of law.

For over 40 years, Mark has been dedicated to pro bono work combating antisemitism. In the 1980s, he served as National Chair and Senior Counsel of B’nai Brith’s League for Human Rights. He has delivered extensive lectures on legal strategies to counter hate and has promoted interfaith dialogues between Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, and Black communities. Mark has appeared before Parliamentary committees and the Supreme Court of Canada on numerous occasions concerning antisemitism and hate-related activities. He is a former member of the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and currently serves as Chair of the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism.
